Hepatic Steatosis and MASH

Hepatic Steatosis and MASH

When I was in training, fat in the liver was felt to be normal and of no clinical significance. Over the last
4 decades we have learned that in many individuals the presence of fat in the liver can cause chronic
damage leading to fibrosis, or scar formation, and eventually to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Now, in fact, the most common cause of a liver transplant is MASH.

Metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASH) is a silent killer with the disease eating
away at the liver. Any liver blood test abnormalities require a prompt and detailed evaluation.
Ultrasound and CT scan of the liver can be done, a FIB-4 score calculated and special tests like
Fibroscan done to assess the degree and severity of illness.

Weight reduction, diabetes disease control need to be done and now we have FDA approved
medication to treat the fibrosis and reverse the damage.
