Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease

Symptomatic Celiac Disease is far less common than perceived by the public. There are
patients that have Gluten sensitivity with poor tolerance to wheat based products, but do not
have Celiac disease in the strictest sense.

Celiac Disease is an immunological illness when the small intestinal lining is damaged by
consuming a gluten based diet i.e. wheat. It is diagnosed on endoscopy or by blood test then
later helping manage the patient’s response to the therapy.

Weight loss, diarrhea, passing greasy oily stool are symptoms in classic Celiac disease but
most cases now are mild and picked up by subtle symptoms, blood test abnormalities including
anemia and osteoporosis. Total avoidance of gluten in the diet is the treatment and individuals
can live normal lives though they have a higher risk of developing a small bowel cancer.
