Hepatitis
Hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, can be from a variety of causes. Infection, usually by viruses,
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are on the decline. Alcohol still is a common offender and a special type of
hepatitis called Hepatic Steatosis and MASH (Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver
Disease) is on a meteoric rise. This will be dealt with separately (see MASH).
Both Hepatitis B and C can lead to cirrhosis and also liver cancer and therefore these individuals need
to be followed closely and regularly by a Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist. Fortunately, excellent
treatment is available for Hepatitis C and the virus can be eliminated in over 90% of individuals.
Hepatitis B viral elimination is difficult and challenging but with the present therapies the virus is
subdued into remission in the bloodstream and the damage limited.
